Relating to public art, but not in new media terms, is New York Artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles in which she did a series of public performances titled Maintenance Series. Washing (1974) was a piece where Ukeles got on her hands and knees and scrubbed the floors of the museum to bring the domestic chores of women, the sterotypes of women, in collision with the pristine expectations and male-driven art society. She was a feminist artists not to be reckoned with.
